Functional training has its origins in rehabilitation. Physiotherapists developed exercises that mimicked what patients did at home or at work, to help them return to their daily lives or jobs following an injury or operation.
For strength exercises to effectively transfer to your everyday movements, several components of the training movement must resemble the actual performance movement. These include coordination, the type of muscle contraction (concentric, eccentric, isometric), the speed of movement and the range of motion. Standard resistance training equipment is only of limited use for functional training, as its fixed movement patterns rarely mimic natural movements and the effort is concentrated on a single muscle group rather than engaging the stabilisers and peripheral muscles.
