The concept of multi-gyms is based on combining several individual training stations into a single piece of equipment. Instead of setting up a separate machine for every exercise, a common weight stack is used, with force transmitted via cables and pulleys to various handles and levers. This creates many exercise possibilities in a very small space.
Its historical roots lie in early forms of training using ropes and counterweights, which existed as far back as antiquity, for instance in military or gladiatorial training. In the 19th century, such principles were further developed in gymnasiums and medical facilities, though almost exclusively as individual pieces of equipment for a single movement each.
The real breakthrough came in the 20th century, especially from the 1950s onwards. With the rise of gyms, rehabilitation centers, and later home training, the need arose to allow many people to exercise in a limited space. Manufacturers developed weight stacks where a single stack enabled multiple exercises via a system of pulleys. This established the fundamental concept of the multi-station gym.
These devices became widespread in the 1970s and 1980s, primarily due to the home fitness boom. Multi-gym stations were considered safe, versatile, and beginner-friendly, as the movements were guided and no free weights were required. Typical setups consisted of a lat pulldown, chest press, leg extension, and cable pulley on a sturdy frame.
From the 1990s onwards, the systems became more technically sophisticated. Improved biomechanics, better adjustment options, and the option for multiple people to train at the same time made multi-station gyms a permanent fixture in fitness studios, hotels, and rehabilitation centers.
Today, multi-gym stations are evolving towards functional training. Modern systems rely on free cable pulls, modular extensions, and hybrid concepts that combine classic strength exercises with natural movement patterns. The core idea, however, has remained the same: to combine many individual training stations into a single, efficient piece of equipment, thereby optimizing space, costs, and training effort.
Multi-station towers are particularly practical because they combine several training stations in a single unit, thereby saving a lot of space. Instead of spreading many individual machines throughout the room, a multi-station tower bundles various exercises at a central point.
A major advantage is that multiple people can train on them simultaneously. Different stations or cable pulleys are arranged so that users do not get in each other's way. This makes training operations more efficient and reduces waiting times.
Since multi-station towers are usually placed centrally in the room, the available space can be used optimally. The room remains uncluttered, easy to navigate, and flexibly usable, which makes them very attractive for gyms and training rooms.
Multi-station towers are the ideal solution for modern fitness centers that want to offer maximum training variety in a limited space. They allow multiple people to train simultaneously on a single tower without getting in each other's way. This not only increases training capacity but also ensures a smooth flow during peak hours.
Thanks to their well-thought-out design, multi-station towers can often be placed centrally in the room. This optimizes the use of training areas and reduces walking paths. Members have quick access to various exercise stations, from lat pulldowns and seated rows to tricep and core exercises.
Another advantage is their high stability and durability, which are specifically designed for continuous studio use. Robust frames, precise cable systems, and easily adjustable weight stacks ensure safe and comfortable training for beginners and experienced athletes alike.
Multi-gyms are the ideal solution for anyone who wants to enable a full-fledged strength training program at home for the whole family. Thanks to multiple training stations, several people can train simultaneously on one piece of equipment without getting in each other's way. This turns the home gym into a shared training space.
A multi-gym combines all major muscle groups into one compact system. Whether it's legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms, or core, you can perform a complete full-body workout with just one machine. Different resistances and simple adjustments make it possible for beginners, teenagers, and experienced athletes to train individually.
Especially in everyday family life, the flexibility is impressive: everyone trains at their own time or in parallel, without waiting times and without the need for additional equipment. The guided movements ensure a safe and joint-friendly workout, which is also ideal for older people or those returning to fitness.
Do not just plan for the machine's footprint (usually about 2–3 m²), but also for an "operating radius." For exercises such as pull-ups or leg raises, you should leave about 50 cm of space on all sides and at least 20–30 cm of clearance to the ceiling so that you do not hit your head when pulling yourself up.
Most modern multi-station towers are designed as freestanding units and feature a wide H-shaped base for maximum stability. Bolting is usually only necessary for extremely lightweight models or in professional gym settings. Ensure the weight capacity is well above your own body weight.
Yes. The ergonomically guided movements relieve strain on the joints and spine. Many physiotherapists even recommend multi-gym stations for rehabilitation and preventive training. If you have any existing ailments, you should consult a doctor first.
Very little. Regular checking of the screws and occasional regreasing of the cables is sufficient. High-quality stations are extremely durable and low-maintenance.
For most people, 2–4 training sessions per week are enough to make noticeable progress. This depends on your goal, time, and fitness level – but a multi-gym is designed so that you can use it to train regularly, safely, and effectively.
Most multi-gyms include an instruction manual for the exercises, and in addition, there are numerous tutorials on YouTube for most exercises. This allows you to see step-by-step how to correctly train your chest, back, arms, shoulders, legs, and core. This enables you to train safely and effectively, even without prior experience.
We especially recommend the multi-station gyms from Hoist, as they are of very high quality.
